The Art Sales Catalogues Project

Based on Frits Lugt's Répertoire des Catalogues de Ventes Publiques intéressant l'Art ou la Curiosité.

The Art Sales Catalogues Online database presents the online edition of the Répetoire des Catalogues de Ventes Publiques by Frits Lugt combined with the possibility to view complete art sales catalogues. This database provides a multitude of search options. Many recently discovered catalogues have been added and corrections to the original Répertoire have been made.

A rich source for art historians
Art sales and auction catalogues of previous centuries offer one of the most important resources for the study of the history of collecting, as well as a primary means of establishing a work of art's history and provenance. There are some sale catalogues which have survived intact since the early seventeenth century, but the practice of issuing such catalogues really began to come into its own from around the end of the same century. Since then, the number of catalogues issued has grown steadily year by year. Many sales catalogues, especially the older ones from the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, have become extremely rare and for some of these only one or two copies have survived. Because these sometimes contain marginal notes concerning the lots, prices and purchasers, researchers are often forced to go in search of information in libraries spread all over the world.

Scanning
The systematic scanning of original catalogues offers researchers optimal access to the catalogues, while also making a significant contribution to their conservation.

Since 1987, IDC Publishers (an imprint of BRILL since 2006) has been filming art sales catalogues in many different libraries and published them on microfiche. Of certain catalogues more than one copy has been filmed due to different annotations or translated editions.

In 2004 the microfiches of the Art Sales Catalogues collection have been scanned. The collection is since then available as an online publication. New additions are scanned from the original catalogues.

It is BRILL's intention that the Art Sales Catalogues collection will eventually comprise all catalogues from the period between 1600 and 1900. BRILL will continue to supplement the collection by scanning catalogues from this period in libraries all over the world.

Frits Lugt (1884-1970)

Frits Lugt was both an art collector and an eminent scholar. He received his early training at the well known Amsterdam auction house of Frederik Muller (1911-1915). After leaving the auction house he started publishing. He compiled catalogues on Dutch and Flemish drawings of the Louvre, the Bibliothèque National and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. In 1921, Lugt published Les marques de collections des dessins et de stamps, an invaluable reference work presenting marks of collectors and their biographies. [Fondation Custodia has published in 2010 an open access database based on this reference work at www.marquesdecollections.fr].

During his time at the auction house of Frederik Muller, Lugt's main occupation was compiling auction catalogues. This may have been the reason why he later put together the Répertoire des catalogues de ventes publiques intéressant l'art ou la curiosité, a finding aid for art sales catalogues from the period 1600 to 1925. This immense work in 4 volumes appeared between 1938 and 1987 (volume 4 appeared after his death). It lists more than 100.000 auction catalogues. The basis for this index was his own collection of auction catalogues which he later donated to the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History in the Hague.

Lugt collected an impressive number of paintings, drawings, and prints during his lifetime. After the death of his father-in-law in 1931, his wife inherited a fortune which gave them the opportunity to expand their collecting activities.

Frits Lugt founded the Fondation Custodia (1947) and the Institut Néerlandais (1957) in Paris. The Fondation Custodia still houses Lugt's art collection.

The Répertoire

For some decades now, the Répertoire des Catalogues de Ventes Publiques by Frits Lugt has been one of the most widely consulted art historical reference works. In four volumes covering the period 1600 to 1925, Lugt lists more than 100,000 art sales catalogues from libraries in Europe and the USA. He not only describes the collections of the larger libraries, such as the Paris Bibliothèque de l'Art et de l'Arché, but also catalogues the contents of minor collections. In the Répertoire, all catalogues are arranged in strict chronological order, giving date, place, order or provenance of each property, type of sale (whether pictures, prints or objets d'art), number of lots, auctioneer, library in which the catalogue may be consulted and details of any annotations in the catalogue described (prices, names, additions, remarks).

Volume one of the Répertoire was printed in 300 copies only. Volume two and three also had relatively small print runs. These volumes are now highly sought after, and very expensive to buy through antiquarian sources.

The Lugt database has been included in Art Sales Catalogues Online. Lugt's Répertoire online is the "entrance gate" to the images of the catalogues.

ASCO User Guide

The Art Sales Catalogues database has over 65,000 records. Simple searching for example for a specific Lugt number, a place or a name is possible using the standard search option at the top of the screen. For more sophisticated searching an advanced search option is available that offers the possibility to combine different search criteria, for example a search for a specific place in combination with a defined period.

All catalogues have been OCR-ed. The quality of the OCR is relatively low, especially for the older catalogues, but is certainly an added value. Names of painters are often printed in capitals, giving a better OCR-result. Search results in the text are presented in a snippet of the OCR-ed text.

By default search results are sorted on the Lugt number. Sorting by Relevance is possible, which could be helpful in a full-text search.

Click Advanced Search to start your query.

Advanced Search

The publication Art Sales Catalogues Online contains several search options:

  • by Lugt number. The numbers Frits Lugt has assigned to the catalogues in his Répertoire.
  • by Date from / Date to. Search a specific day or date range by entering dates (format: yyyy-mm-dd) or selecting from the calendar (click the heading in the calendar to “zoom out”), Auctions lasting multiple days are included in the search results if the entered Date from (and Date to) falls between the first and last day of the auction. Whenever Lugt lists in his Répertoire a specific day for an auction with the addition of "following days" (jj.ss.) behind it, a period of 4 days is taken as default duration of the auction. To get the search results in Lugt number order(=chronological order) do not forget to click Sort results by Lugt number sorted.
  • by Year from. Search a specific year, multiple years or range of years. To get the search results in Lugt number order(=chronological order) do not forget to click Sort results by Lugt number sorted.
  • by Location means by place of sales. Searches can be made by browsing the list or by typing a place name (either the name as printed in Lugt’s Répertoire or by the standardized form of the place name according to the LC authority files for names).
  • by Provenance. Search by typing in a specific name.
  • by Auction house. Search by typing in a specific name.
  • by Scanned Copy. Search by the abbreviations used in the printed edition of Lugt's Répertoire. If you are not familiar with the abbreviations please consult the Library Abbreviations tab. A search by Scanned Copy results in records for which a scanned copy is available in the database.
  • by Content. Search the database by content, i.e. Books, Curiosa, Drawings,  Engravings, Fashion, Furnishings, Jewelry, Natural History, Maps, Medals, Musical Instruments, Paintings, Porcelains, Prints, Sculpture, Wines.
  • by ESTC reference. Search the database identification number in the English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC). For more information please visit the website of the British Library.
