Description:
VGF 48 is a paper codex, its leaves measuring 301 × 205. It contains various watermarks, including ones similar to Briquet nos. 549 and 3488, as well as an ancres dans un cercle surmounté d’étoile avec contramarques variées, tête de boeuf avec contramarque watermark. It is constructed from 31 quires of mostly 4 bifolia, + 6 folia + 1*, totalling 1* + 247 folia. Quires signatures are visible in the first 8 quires, and occasionally elsewhere. Catchwords were added by the copyist. Written space occupies an area of 210 × 115 mm over 27 lines (ff. 2r-62r), 225 × 135 mm over 30 lines (ff. 64r-76v), 205 × 130 mm over 29 lines (ff. 79r-87r, 94r-101r), 210/215 × 130/125 mm over 30-31 lines (ff. 88r-93r, 102r-105v), 210/220 × 130 over 30-31 lines (ff. 106r-121v), 225 × 130 mm over 26 lines (ff. 122r-129v), 210 × 120 mm over 28 lines (f. 130r), 200 × 120 mm over 27 lines ( ff. 135r-246v). Hard point ruling is used in places. The codex was written by a number of different scribes, one of whom appears to have been Andreas Darmarius (1540-late 16th-c; Vogel-Garthausen, p. 17). Most inscriptions, initials, and decorations are rubricated, while initials and decorations on ff. 79-105 are in red and green. Ff 182r, 188v, 190v, 208v, 235v contain colour pictures illustrating the text of the Apocalypse. It has a new dark leather cover.
