Description:
VGF 58 is a paper codex, its leaves measuring 287 × 215 mm. It contains watermarks similar to Briquet nos. 3271 (ff. 1r-167r) and 3189 (ff. 168-305). It is constructed from 38 quires of mostly 4 bifolia, plus 3 folia, totalling 305 folia. Quires were labelled at the beginning and end, partly by the scribe, partly by another hand. Many folia are damaged in the earlier part of the codex. Gaps were later repaired, with small pieces of paper with the missing the text on stuck into the codex. Written space covers an area of 220/225 × 140/155 mm, spread over 36-47 lines (ff. 1r-167v), 230 × 150 mm over 41-49 lines (ff. 168-235), 245/255 × 160/170 mm over 70-74 lines (ff. 236v-242v), 230/235 × 150 mm over 47-54 lines (ff. 247-305v). The codex appears to have been written by two scribes, the first working on ff. 1r-167v, the second ff. 168r-305v. Decorations, inscriptions, and initials are rubricated. Marginal notes and annotations have been added by a variety of hands throughout. The codex has a 17th-c. cover made of sheepskin, typical for codices from the library of Melchisédech Thévenot.
