VGQ 4 is a silk codex, its leaves measuring around 250 × 165/175 mm. The codex is now divided into two volumes: Q. 4 A and Q. 4 B. It is constructed of 9 quires of 3-5 bifolia + 3 folia, totalling 70 folia (Q. 4 A: ff. 1-31; B: ff. 32-70). Quire signatures were added by a later hand. The margins have been cut back on several leaves at the end of Q. 4 B. Written space covers an area of 170/185 × 120 mm, with text spread over 19-30 lines in 2 columns (Q. 4 A) and around 240 × 155 mm with the number of lines varying. Pindar’s Odes are set in two columns. Scholia and interlineal notes have been added in places by a variety of hands. The codex was either written by a single scribe, or Q. 4 B was written by a contemporary scribe. ff. 2r and 14r have marginal decorations in colour, interpretations and interlineal notes are written in red on f. 2, while inscriptions, initials, and lemmata are rubricated in Q. 4 B.
