Description:
VGQ 18 is a convolute of various apographa made by Henricus Stephanus mixed with fragments of books. It has a new dark leather cover.
Part 1 (f. 1) measures 204 × 150 mm and dates from the 18th c.
Part 2 (ff. 2r-7r) dates to the 16th c (1553). Its leaves measure 230 × 160 mm, other than f. 2 which measures 205 × 160 mm. It was written and owned by Henricus Stephanus (Henri Estienne 1528/1531-1598), later coming into the possession of A. Petavius.
Part 3 (ff. 8r-13r) dates to the 15th c. Its leaves measure 217 × 140 mm. Written space occupies an area of 175/180 × 100/110 over 25-29 lines. It was probably written by the same scribe who wrote ff. 113-134.
Part 4 (ff. 14r-23r) dates to the second half of the 16th c. It contains watermarks similar to Briquet no. 7583. Its leaves measure 220 × 155 mm. Written space covers an area of 135 × 90 mm, over 13 lines. Titles are rubricated. It was written by Andreas Damarius.
Part 5 (ff. 24-53) dates to the 16th c. Its leaves measure around 230 × 160 mm. It was written and owned (f. 29) by Henricus Stephanus.
Part 6 (ff. 54r-58r) dates to the second half of the 15th c. It contains watermarks similar to Briquet 2588. Its leaves measure 225 × 160. Written space covers an area of 160 × 85 mm over 25 lines. It was written by Iohannes Plousiadenus (?). The title (f. 55v) and initials are in red.
Part 7 (ff. 59r-86r, 87r-92r, 93r) dates to the 16th-c. Its leaves measure 240 × 160 (ff. 59-86), 230 × 155 (ff. 87-92), 190 × 120 mm (f. 93). The majority was written by Henricus Stephanus. This section was also owned by him, and later the Swiss historian and jurist Melchior Goldastus (1578-1635).
Part 8 (ff. 94-101) dates to the second half of the 16th c. It contains watermarks similar to Briquet 15717. Its leaves measure 225 × 145 mm. It is constructed of a single quire of 4 bifolia. Written space occupies an area of 150 × 85 mm over 26 lines. Inscriptions are rubricated.
Part 9 (ff. 102-111) dates to the 16th c. Its leaves measure ca.220 × 155 mm. It was written by Henricus Stephanus.
Part 10 (ff. 112-135) dates to the 15th c. Its leaves measure 220 × 150 mm. It is constructed of 2 quires of 4 bifolia and 8 folia. Written space covers an area of 180 × 110 mm, over 25 lines (ff. 112r-v) and 160/180 × 100 mm over 25-30 lines. It was written by three scribes.
