Description:
VLF 3 is a paper codex from the second half of the 14th c., its leaves measuring 415 x 290 mm. It is constructed of 18 quires, totalling 179 folia. Written space is divided into two columns of 29-37 lines ruled in dark ink, measuring 230/265 x 170/175 mm. The text is written in Littera formata Bononiensis. A 15th-c. hand added a table of contents on f. 1r-2r, part of which is lost. A different hand, dating to the same period or a little later, wrote quire signatures in red Roman numerals in the top right corner, some of which have disappeared during the binding process. Comments in the margins are in several hands from the second half of the 14th-/15th-c. Catchwords, decorated in red, are written perpendicularly in the lower margins. Major initials beginning each book are coloured red and blue, as are the minor initials denoting the start of a new chapter. They are underlined in red and violet. Paragraph marks in the text are in red or blue, while inscriptions are rubricated. The text is illuminated with 197 square or oblong images painted in different colours. They are at the end of each chapter, depicting various medical treatments. The codex has a 16th-/17th-c. cardboard cover with parchment protection.
