Description:
VLF 10 is a parchment codex from the first half of the 12th c., its leaves measuring 360 x 255 mm. It is constructed of 32 quires of mostly 4 bifolia, totalling 244 leaves (488 pages). The scribe added catchwords, many of which have been cut off during the binding process. Writing space covers 275/280 x 190/195, divided into 2 columns of 38-39 lines in hard point ruling. The text was written in Minuscula carolina by several hands. There are many major initials in dark ink, decorated with fabulous animals, birds, tree branches and leaves (painted in many colours). Minor initials are sometimes rubricated. Inscriptions and subscriptions are also painted red. The first words of each enarratio are also written in decorated letters. Fol. 1 stands out as it is a 12th-c. leaf from another codex, its writing space being 320 x 215 mm, divided into 2 colums of 37 lines. It is also written in Minuscula carolina. The codex has a 17th-c. cardboard binding, protected by sheepskin, typical for codices from the library of Melchisédech Thévenot. Some leaves are missing between f. 2v and 3r; forgotten passages are added in the margins by the same or another scribe.
