Description:
VLF 12 was divided into 6 parts in 1886 (1-6). All parts are parchment manuscripts with a 19th-c. cardboard binding, protected by multi-coloured paper. The spine and corners are in parchment.
Part 1 (ff. 1-14) dates from the first half of the 13th c., its leaves measuring 355 x 270 mm. Folio I (in paper) used to be part of the old binding by Alexandre Pétau. On its verso is an index to the entire codex (before it was split up into different parts), written by the same hand that was responsible for Pétau's bookcatalogue (now cod. VLQ 76). Written space covers 295/300 x 150/160 mm, divided into 2 columns of 58 lines ruled in dark ink. Two different scribes wrote in Littera gothica textualis. Several 13th-14th-c. hands wrote marginalia, some seem to have been written by P. Daniel of Orléans. Initials are in red or blue, as are paragraph signs.
Part 2 (ff. 15-26) dates from the 9th c. (c. 850), its leaves measuring 360 x 260 mm. It is constructed of 2 quires, totalling 12 leaves (24 pages). Written space covers 265 x 170 mm (32 lines in hard point ruling). The text is written in Minuscula carolina. Corrections are made by the scribe himself and by another hand. The latter also added variant readings and, based on these, he might be identified with Servatius Lupus of Ferrières. This part used to be joined together with fol. 1r-v from VLF 122.
Part 3 (ff. 27-34) dates from the beginning of the 10th c., its leaves measuring 355 x 255 mm. It is constructed of a single quire of 4 bifolia. Written space covers 275 x 175/180 mm, divided into 2 columns of 38 lines in hard point ruling. The text is written by a single scribe in Minuscula carolina. The same scribe, or a contemporary scribe, added notes in the margins and between the lines.
Part 4 (ff. 35-42) dates from the 9th c., its leaves measuring 340 x 260 mm. Some folios are missing after f. 35, while f. 41 and f. 42 are cut off. Written space covers 250/255 x 190 mm, divided into 2 columns of 32-33 lines in hard point ruling. The text is written by several scribes in Minuscula carolina.
Part 5 (ff. 43-54) dates from the second half of the 12th c., its leaves measuring 360 x 260 mm. Quire signatures in a 16th-c. hand appear in the lower right corners. Written space covers 320 x 205 mm, divided into 2 columns of 66 lines in hard point ruling. The text is written in Littera sub-carolina. Part of the text on ff. 43r and 54v has vanished.
Part 6 (ff. 55-65) dates from the second half of the 10th c., its leaves measuring 335/340 x 240 mm. Written space covers 275/280 x 180 mm, divided into 2 columns of 35 lines in hard point ruling. Ff. 55r-58ra seem to be written by a single hand; two or more other scribes worked on the other pages. All wrote in Minuscula carolina. Major and minor initials are decorated with animals and human figures, painted in several colours. Capitals within the text are filled out in red.
