Description:
VLF 18 is a mid-12th-c. parchment codex, its leaves measuring 350 x 240 mm. It is constructed of 19 quires of mostly 4 bifolia, totalling 131 leaves (262 pages). Quire signatures are in Roman numerals and appear in the lower margins (added by the scribe). Catchwords in the first quire were added by a later scribe. A major part of folios 1, 2, 10 and 31 is cut off and there are many lacunae in the text. The scribe, or a somewhat later hand added variant readings in the margins. Mutilated parts were repaired with parchment. Written space covers 250 x 150 mm, divided into 2 columns of 42 lines (hard point ruling or in dark ink). The text is written in Minuscula carolina-gothica. At the start of each new book are major initials in red, green and blue. Minor initials start off new chapters; they are in several colours. Inscriptions are rubricated. The codex has a 19th-c. cardboard cover with dark leather protection.
