Language:

Date range:
Late 14th c.
Author(s):
Titus Livius (59 BC-17 AD)
Description:
VLF 21 is a two-part parchment codex from the end of the 14th c., its leaves measuring 335 x 240 mm. The codex has a 17th-c. cardboard cover with parchment protection, possibly made for Alexandre Pétau.
Part 1 (f. 1-114) is constructed of 14 quires of mostly 4 bifolia, totalling 114 leaves (228 pages). Quire signatures appear in the lower margins, as do catchwords (if not cut off). A 16th-c. hand numbered the first 25 leaves in Arabic numerals. F. 63 reveals water damage. Written space covers 245/255 x 165 mm, divided into 2 columns of 43-46 lines in hard point ruling. The text is written in Littera cursiva libraria. Initials, inscriptions, and subscriptions have not all been completed. There are many omissions which are identified in the margins by a somewhat later hand. Some passages in books 28 to 29 appear in the wrong place, as is noted by a 17th-c. hand, possibly I. Vossius' own hand. Variant readings and lemmata are offered in the margins in many different hands. A 15th-c. hand dated events in the margins, taking Rome's founding as a starting point.
Part 2 (f. 115-235) is constructed of 12 quires of mostly 5 bifolia. There are catchwords remnant in the lower margins; a few quires at the end were numbered in a later hand. Written space covers 245 x 165 mm, divided into 2 columns of 44 lines ruled in dark ink. The text is written by a single scribe (different from Part 1) in Littera textualis. Initials and inscriptions have not all been added.
