Description:
VLF 70 was divided in three different parts in 1870. VLF 70-I is itself a convolute of two manuscripts, held together by a 19th-c. cardboard binding with dark leather protection (on which the emblem of Leiden University is stamped).
Part 1 (ff. 1-66) is a 10th-c. parchment codex, its leaves measuring c. 290 x 215 mm. It comprises 8 quires of mostly 4 bifolia (of which some folia are lost), totalling 66 leaves (132 pages). From f. 50 onwards, the text has faded in numerous places because of water damage. A few quire signatures are still visible. Written space covers 230/235 x 160/165 mm, divided into 2 columns of 42-43 lines in hard point ruling. The text was written by 6 scribes in Minuscula carolina and sub-carolina. Lavishly decorated initials appear on ff. 1r, 5v (major) and 6r (minor). Each work starts with rubricated letters. Inscriptions are also rubricated.
Part 2 (ff. 67-73) is also a 10th-c. parchment codex, its leaves measuring 285/290 x 210 mm. It comprises 1 quire of 4 bifolia (minus 1 leaf). Written space covers 225/230 x 170/175 mm, divided into 2 columns of 41 lines in hard point ruling. The text was written by 2 scribes in Minuscula carolina. Inscriptions are rubricated, but initials are without colour.
