Full Description:
Governor Lord William Campbell to Dartmouth at Charles Town [Charleston]. Extract of a letter (enclosed by John Pownall to Howe, 25 Sept 1775) regarding the sending [to South Carolina] by Gage of sufficient naval and military forces to protect the coast, and of the smuggling activities of vessels from the Dutch, French and Spanish settlements [of the West Indies] in the neighbouring creeks, to trade in 'military stores'. Reporting on the advices and mandates of the [Philadelphia] Continental Congress (who intend to find two million dollars to raise an army), and the subsequent spirit of"Loyalty and affection" (to His Majesty) that has been stirred up amongst the back country people and the Indians.
