Full Description:
Earl of Dartmouth to Howe. Duplicate of a letter which was sent to Governor Martin on 19 September, regarding the despatch of an expedition to the southern provinces. To aid the people of the interior [particularly the Scots settlers] of the Carolinas against the 'oppresive acts' of the committees in the towns upon the sea coasts. Plans to reduce North Carolina and Virginia (under Lord Dunmore) and crush the dangerous rebellion in the colonies with small forces. Orders to embark five regiments of infantry (the 15th, 37th, 53rd, 54th and 57th Foot) at Cork for North America, to be transported to the Cape Fear River in support of the Highland emigrants who have taken up arms in the king's cause. The port of St Augustine [British East Florida] offering a base and secure place of retreat should the worst happen.
