Governor Peter Chester to Howe. Pensacola. He passes on information to Howe received from a Cherokee chief who is presently with him. In July about 1,800 Cherokee warriors had set out with the intention of attacking back settlers in the Carolinas and Virginia who had taken over Indian land. While some scalps were taken, the Indians would not molest those who had settled outside their territory. Information also that the rebels had established several forts along the Ohio River below Fort Pitt, and may attack the western [Tory] settlers (who are in no position to defend themselves).
