Washington to General Howe. On his reply to the Howe's letter (3 October), defending his actions in the destruction of the flour mills and barns as the customary practice of armies. Highligting the countermanding of the rules of war by the action of 'your troops' at Trenton, and the destruction of Charlestown [Charleston] [by the British].
