Full Description:
[General Sir Henry Clinton] to Major-General Eyre Massey, or Officer Commanding His Majesty's Forces at Halifax. A letter from Headquarters in New York stating that Major Hierlyhy and his Corps had been ordered to the island of St John's for the defence and security of it but had been detained at the Spanish River, so it was thought that some troops from Halifax could be spared for the protection of the coal mines there so that Hierlyhy could proceed to his destination. Returned from Rhode Island after finding the besieging rebels had left the evening before. Colonel Butler and a body of Indians and others destroyed some settlements and defeated the Continentals assembled against him. The French fleet are assisting the Americans attempts against Rhode Island, and have got into Boston. Will consider recommendations for successions. Lieutenant-Colonel Gunning is permitted to leave for Europe.
