Clinton to [Germain]. New York. Number 37. Appointment of Colonels Matthew, Smith, Prevost, Pattison, Leslie, Sir William Erskine and Campbell to the rank of Brigadier Generals in America, in consequence of which they commanded all Hessian Colonels but by a late appointment of three of those Colonels to the rank of Major-General. Generals Matthew and Pattison the two eldest of the Brigadiers upon the spot, the rest being detached upon distant services find themselves in an awkward situation and have represented it to me desiring I would lay the matter befor your Lordship.
