McLean to Clinton. Halifax. Private. Detachment of 500 men are ready to embark for the Penobscot River to construct forts. Observes recommendation to employ Goreham's corps and the King's Orange Rangers but it would not be possible to relieve them at Fort Cumberland for under two months. Campbell should form adetachment. Mouatt expected to arrive from Annapolis with the 'Albany'. Will discuss the best manner to carry out directions, and as to a naval force needed for the defence of that port. Enemy post near or at Machias.
