Bruce to Clinton. Halifax. Enclosing a return of the provisions and Mr Crawford's letter. With regard to eight months supply demanded by McLean, thinks it adviseable to send only four at least of flour. Death of William Smith, at a loss how to procure subsistence for the troops, and £5,600 loan which falls short of demands. Mistaken measure with a Mr Mead carrying money out of the province, and employment of John Newton, Surveyor of Customs. McLean writes for money and Spry has stopped working for want of it. Privateers constantly lurking in the mouth of the river and the taking of a brig from Glasgow. almost within reach of the guns of Point Pleasant (her cargo valued at £10,000). The 70th Foot behind encamped behind Citadel Hill, and news of the arrival of a ship from Newry with 1,000 barrels of pork, 200 of oatmeal, but no flour.
