Full Description:
Brigadier-General [Benedict] Arnold to Clinton. New York. In answer to the message respecting [Major John] André and his idea of the reasons why he is detained when he is under the flag of truce. Maintains that when commanding at West Point he had undoubted right to send the flag of truce for him, and that after the conversation he had handed him confidential papers. Thinking it proper that he should return by land, directed him to make use of the feigned name of John Anderson and give him passports.
