Full Description:
Clinton to Washington. New York. Has received an answer to his letter 'of the 26th'. Does not answer all questions but does contain declarations of the most serious consequences in what relates to Major André. Mentions that Washington's decision differs entirely in opinion from that of the American General Officers, and that he cannot consider André to have been a spy. Warns about putting to death an officer of the British Army, and proposes a meeting of three persons from each side to discuss the subject.
