Full Description:
Benedict Arnold to Washington. New York. Discusses Mr [Major John] André coming under the description of a spy. He was there at Arnold's particular request, by a flag [of truce] sent on purpose for him by Joshua Smith. As several accidents prevented him returning the way he had come by ship, Arnold, his commanding officer, had given him his passport to return by land. Mentions how forty of the principal inhabitants of South Carolina have been spared by the clemency of Clinton but cannot in justice extend this if anything happens to André.
