Full Description:
Captain George Gayton to Clinton. Aboard the 'Romulus', Hampton Roads. Document dated in five parts. 19 November reports on a letter from Cornwallis to Leslie which recommends that Portsmouth [Outer Banks] should be evacuated and the troops removed to Cape Fear. 12 November, answer to Cornwallis's letter and writing to the 'Commanding Officer at Sea' for every assistance in his power. 16 November, the troops marched out of Portsmouth. 17 November, troops all embarked and sailed and anchored safe in Hampton Roads where the majority of the inhabitants had left. 21 November, hopes to get the fleet down to Lynhaven Bay and then proceed southward to Cape Fear.
