Full Description:
Cornwallis to Clinton. New York. Does not recollect that any conversation passed between them the other day before the publication of his letter, relative to his reasons for taking prossession of the posts of York and Gloucester. But in answer to dispatches dated the 8 and 11 July, your Excellency will see that after finding that works on Point Comfort could not protect a naval force in Hampton Roads, so he acted in strict obedience to orders by taking possession of those posts. Thought it unnecessary to enter into minute details about actions of erecting forts or protecting the harbour. Ends discussion by referring to a letter of 20 October, whereby he did not feel that he has to explain his own conduct that preceded the extremity that forced them to surrender.
