Full Description:
Sir Guy Carleton to Lieutenant General Alexander Leslie. New York. Has seen Captain Elphinston relating to an evacuation of St Augustine, and he considers it advisable to postpone that until after the evacuation of Savannah and Charlestown as it requires more tonnage than they have at present. Elphinston believes that if Governor Tonyn was informed about the evacuation taking place at he end of the year or spring then it would result in it being achieved more speedily and easily. Agrees with suggestions and inclined to leave St Augustine for now, especially as the troops from Charlestown will greatly assist New York. However as Leslie is so well informed he will leave it to him [Leslie] to give orders as he sees fit.
