Full Description:
Carleton to Haldimand. Encloses some published gazettes which contain an account of the victory by Sir George Rodney over Monsieur de Grasse, but he [Carleton] has not received any direct information. Cannot give any certainty over the destination of the French force, he does not yet have direct channels of authentic information. It was conjectured that the French were destined for Jamaica first, but in reality believes New York is their aim. Conjectures have been made that Canada is also a target. Warns that all stations must be prepared against all possible eventualities.
