Full Description:
Washington to Sir Guy Carleton Carleton. Headquarters. In compliance with promise made to Lieitenant-General Robinson in a letter of 4 May, an enquiry has been made into the circumstances of the detention of Hetfield and Bageley, the result of which is contained in the enclosed copy of a report made by the Chief Justice Breasly of the state of New Jersey, to Governor Livingston. It explains the reasons which induced the civil power of that state to apprehend and detain those persons. An extract of the governor's letter also accompanies. 'As they were not taken or held under military power, he cannot make an observation on the subject'.
