Full Description:
Major-General Edward Mathew to the Earl of Shelborne. Antigua. Two extracts of a l etter. The first discussing how since the enemy has been in possession of Brimstone Hill they have been constanty employed in strengthening that work, and though they have not more than 'fom 6 to 700 men to occupy it, it is not to be reduced but by very heavy artillery'. Mathew is entirely unprovided for and sends a return by which it will clearly appear how inadequate his forces are. Second document, includes disscussion of previous letters, the incorporation of regiments, and the deficiency of field ordnance and stores.
