Full Description:
Earl of Shelburne, Whitehall to Carleton. Secret. Acknowledges receipt of earlier letters and approves his dialogue with General Washington seeking an early accommodation with the American Colonies. He mentions the fate of the Patriot officer recently executed by the British [Joshua Huddy] and trusts that this will not be a stumbling block to improved relations. He urges Carleton to pay particular attention to the security of the provinces of Nova Scotia and Canada, as he has received disturbing reports of French and American activities by both sea and on land. He asks that close attention be paid also to the military situation in East Florida and asks to be kept fully informed.
