Full Description:
Carleton to the Earl of Shelburne. 'My chief inducement for returning to this continent, after what I had experienced in the years seventy-five, seventy-six and seventy-seven, proceeded from an ardent desire to see these colonies reconciled to Great Britain, together with some faint hopes that I might prove useful in bringing about this great object to the desired end. Now therefore I find by your Lordships letter of 'the 5th' to Digby and myself that all these prospects have been done away. Requests to resign commissions and return to Europe.
