Admiral Hugh Pigot to Carleton. Aboard the 'Formidable'. Reporting that he has been informed by a passing schooner that the French squadron had been sighted about 14 days ago possibly heading for Rhode Island. He cannot depend on the accuracy of this information and has therefore dispatched a frigate to the Chesapeake ahead of the fleet. If nothing is found he hopes to be in New York in a few days.
