Full Description:
[Carleton] to Captain Sir Andrew Snape Hammond. New York. Sends copy of a letter written by Digby and himself as Commissioners for Peace to General Washington to which they have not yet had an answer other than an acknowledgement of receipt and that it should be transmitted to Congress. Difficult to foresee what may follow the proposition made at Paris but it seems certain that many refugees will need and have a just claim to establishments out of the 13 provinces; therefore advises him as a precaution to reserve as much land as possible in his province to answer demands which are likely to press on the generosity and good faith of the public. Is informed of the near approach of the English fleet under Admiral Pigot. Recommends the bearer Major General Paterson to mutual regards.
