Full Description:
Lieutenant Governor Archibald Campbell to Carleton. Jamaica. Sends a duplicate of his despatch of 13 July last. Has intelligence as late as 20 August from Cape Francois that Don Galvez and the combined army are still in cantonments and barracks at Hispaniola. After allowing for about 2,000 French troops embarked for the Windward Islands, the troops gone aboard as marines and others dead, the forces are now thought to be about 15,000. Two of General O'Hara's transports on their way with troops to St Lucia from Antigua have been forced by adverse currents and want of provisions and water to make for Jamaica. Owing to the dificulty of sending them on at this time of year, he has ordered them to land and join the troops here, until orders are sent for their removal. Has heard that the 79th Regiment and the Loyal American Rangers with some Jamaican troops have bee sent to New York and Bermudas; will be glad of orders given to them to return to their respective corps in Jamaica.
