Full Description:
[Carleton] to Tonyn. Draft letter. Received letter of 31 July with triplicate of dispatches entrusted to Mr Moore, as also the addresses and resolutions of both Houses. Does not propose to consider those papers without a strong sense of the calamities they represent and without the fullest approbation of that manly firmness which seems to breathe through the resolves. The evacuation of St Augustine or any other of the King's dominions must never be considered other than as the lesser of two evils. Whilst he approves of the spirit of the people he finds no representation made to him of their number, condition, means, wants, total force when collected nor the natural strength of the province as necessary for their defence, without which he can make no estimate of events nor effectually co-operate with or safely countenance measures, the probability of whose success are not made in any way likely. Expects necessary information to be sent to enable him to judge what steps it will be proper to take. Lieutenant-General Leslie meantime is directed to send to St Augustine the King's Rangers, South and North Carolina regiments and North Carolina Highlanders to relieve the 60th at St Augustine, and to send a supply of ordnance and stores. Has paid two bills drawn on Clinton to prevent the credit being questioned; desires to know on what authority he proceeded.
