Full Description:
Carleton to the Earl of Shelburne. New York. Informs that he has not received any reply from Washington to whom he had written, requiring a declaration either from him or Congress concerning the condition of Lord Corwallis. Due to a declarations made in Europe by Mr Laurens and Dr Franklin, Carleton instructed his Commissioners at Tappan to bring this point if possible to some decision, and also directed the Commissary-General of Prisoners to apply to the Commissary on their side for an explanation. The latter declined to answer as he was instructed.
