Full Description:
Rear-Admiral Robert Digby to Carleton. New York. Regarding orders given by Carleton that the guns of the 'Culloden' and 'Defiance' not be delivered to the Royal Navy except in exchange for replacements. Says that perhaps Carleton is unaware the guns were only lent and a receipt refused because the navy should have the right to demand them back. Asks if it can make any difference whether the army or the navy purchases twenty two 24 pounders. If Carleton insists that the guns remain with the army he, Digby, will not scruple to buy a sufficient number of the French frigate's guns which are all English and new.
