Full Description:
Carleton to Governor Brown. New York. Sends to Bermuda, Thomas Poole (an American), who has been imprisoned for a very considerable time as a double spy. That his imprisonment would have been shortened but for the risk to the Loyalists known to him. Says Poole has become very decrepit as a result of severe confinement and that he is sent under severe injunctions not to leave Bermuda under any circumstances while the war continues. As little reliance can be placed in a person of Poole's character, asks that Brown takes such steps as are necessary to keep him on the island. If it is too difficult recommends that Poole be sent to one of the West India islands from where his return to America would be impracticable. Says Poole's present situation makes him an object of compassion and being destitute of support asks that he be assisted with clothes and subsistence.
