Full Description:
[Carleton] to Yonge. New York. Receipt of letters of 9 July, 20 July, 1 August. Has considered the list of officers sent and encloses a return for those for whom provision should be made on establishment at home. Thinks the rest of the appointments of the army being merely to answer local exigencies should be paid out of contingencies. Returns also the list of officers of garrisons, with remarks that show he is unacquainted with their residence and some names. As some of the places mentioned are not in English possession it is obvious there can be no reason to continue the appointment unless as a reward for service.
With Enclosures. List of garrison officers in America sent from the War Office and returned with remarks. The list opens with barrack masters of Fort St George, Cumberland, Chartres and Kaskaskias and communication to Philadelphia at 4s per day. The Garrisons include St Augustine, Nova Scotia, Placentia Louisbourg, St John's Island and Bermuda.
