Full Description:
[Sir Guy Carleton] to [George Rose]. New York. Receipt of letters of 4, 6, 7, September. Will give attention to prevent the public money being diverted from its proper end and to further the views of the Treasury in the practice of economy. Has granted Mr William Smith, the Chief Justice of this Province, £500 on account of his salary having never been paid, though his commission bears the date 4 May 1779. The Chief Justice of New Jersey is paid out of the extraordinaries of the army and has referred him to the Lords of the Treasury for liquidation of his demands.
