Full Description:
Brigadier-General Benedict Arnold to Carleton. London. He is informed by Captain Frink that he has requested to have his troop draughted from his (Arnold's) regiment and attached to the Queen's Rangers, or some other corps. Believes this is such an unjust and unreasonable request that Carleton will not comply. It was at Sir Henry Clinton's request that he (Arnold) raised a regiment and was encouraged to give his sons commissions. Lost bounty money because deserters from Mr Washington's army were claimed by the navy. He and officers of the regiment have made sacrifices at great expense joining the King's army and hopes he will not be affected by misrepresentation. On preparing to return to New York he was detained by Lord Shelburne who assured him that this would not affect his pay. Urges Carleton to ensure his batt and forage money will be paid on account of this detainment. Additional note by Arnold added on November 6. Since writing to Lord Shelburne about batt and forage money he called Mr Townshend and was informed by Mr Nepean his secretary that the said money should be paid.
