Full Description:
[Carleton] to Rear-Admiral Digby. New York. Has not been able to procure an authentic return of the transports that are going to Europe. The one he has received shows those going with the 'Warwick' amount to above 7,000 tons, although the number of persons of all descriptions going home do not much exceed 500, including the invalids who go in the ships of war. Also learnt that some of those transports have been sent here for the express purpose of evacuation which is to commence as soon as possible. Has asked for more shipping for the evacuation and urges Digby not to carry off either persons, stores or effects unless absolutely necessary.
