Full Description:
Thomas Townshend to Carleton. Whitehall. Refers to orders given for a further detachment of 1,500 men to be made from the army under Carleton's command; does not hesitate to say it is the King's wish that Carleton not obey the order unless he finds it practicable; that detaching such a number of British troops would have serious consequences. Says that possibly a detachment could be safely formed, consisting of British, Provincials and such foreign troops as can be employed out of North America. Says that Carleton already has the king's authority to offer rank to the Provincial officers as an encouragement to their loyalty and zeal. Every Provincial Corps embarking for the West Indies is to be put on the British establishment. Says Colonel Fanning has offered his services and asks that Carleton recognise his spirited conduct &c. when distributing rank.
