Full Description:
John Douglass, Deputy Secretary of Indian Affairs, to Carleton. St Augustine. Having been appointed as deputy to Lieutenant-Governor Graham during the latter's absence of leave in England, was instructed by him to pay the greatest attention to the Indians of his district. Upwards of 600 Chactaws and Chickasaws having arrived here unexpectedly to renew their friendship, the critical situation following from the evacuation of Charleston and Savannah made it imperative that they be treated with all hospitality and supplied provisions and goods. Great expense unavoidably incurred. Asks for an order for the amount of the ration account to enable him to pay for rum and provisions bought. Tonyn and McArthur have certified the account and that it was to their knowledge absolutely necessary.
