Full Description:
Captain John Stapleton, 17th Light Dragoons to Carleton. New York. Owing to a late arrangement in the staff, he finds himself amongst the number thought unnecessary to be continued in office, submits his situation. That he was apppointed assistant to Lieutenant-Colonel De Lancey in the Adjutant-General's Office in his first appointment and frequently employed in detached services. He was ordered to Charleston to take charge of the department and Lieutenant-General Leslie was directed to pay him. In May he received permission to return to New York but at Leslie's desire he did not avail himself of it. Had he done so, he presumes he would still have been continued in office.
