Full Description:
Governor William Browne to Carleton. Bermuda. Thanks him for the attention paid to their security and means adopted to find out what is required. Lieutenant Slack will report on all he has seen, having inspected the defences, spoken to the inhabitants, seen the militia mustered &c. Does not know what what has been communicated about the failure of the island to provide quarters for the King's troops, so thinks it his duty to enclose an account from the Secretary of the money expended for the battalion's accommodation. Says that taking into account the hardships endured by the inhabitants and their treatment by the military with a severity which would have ill become men less civilized, he will rather wonder with him that they have done so much, than blame them for having done so little. Note endorsed that the original of the letter was lost in the 'Mentor'; duplicate received 29 June 1783.
