Full Description:
General Frederick Haldimand to Carleton. Quebec. Thinks it his duty to report the strong resentment of the Six Nations [of the Iroquois] Indians at, and determination to retaliate the late barbarity committed by the Virginians [under George Rogers Clark] in the total destruction of a Shawanese settlement (Standing Stone Village) and the indiscriminate massacre of all its inhabitants so as to enable Carleton to represent to General Washington the fatal consequences which must unavoidably follow the unwarrantable advantage taken of the restraint from offensive war ordered by the King's minister. Has used every arguement to dissuade the Indians from their aim but at the same time he cannot passively look on and see their country ravaged, their women and children murdered for their attachment to the royal cause and has promised to assist with troops and by every means in his power to oppose the incursions of the enemy [in the Ohio Country]. Carleton being better situated to communicate with Washington sends an extract of the speech delivered by the Six Nations. Says unconfirmed reports are circulating that Charleston is evacuated, the French fleet and army have left the West Indies, Lord Howe has relieved Gibralter &c.
