Full Description:
Abstract of a letter from thirty-five Hessian prisoners of war to His Excellency Lieutenant-General De Losberg, dated Mount Hope [New York], 20 March 1783. Discusses how due to the miseries of the gaol at Philadelphia, they went with a Mr Fash to Mount Hope. After escaping and getting as far as Newark [New Jersey] and being recaptured, they give a detailed description of events that have happened since. On 19 March they heard of a peace being made and that all prisoners were to have their liberty. Beg to be informed of their situation, desire the opportunity to rejoin their regiments and explain to the General in what manner they were forced into their present condition. Names are given, they number thirty of the Regiment of Knyphausen, two of the Regiment of Prince Hereditaire, one of the Regiment of Hessian Artillery, and two of the Regiment of Hesse Hanau Artillery.
