Full Description:
Carleton to Brigadier-General McArthur. New York. Receipt of letter of 11 March [1783]. Approves his conduct regarding Colonel Ball; asks him to avoid all disputes with those people and to refer all such matters to the decision of the Governor. If the King's troops and stores are the source of disputes and law suits, he will order the removal of such part as occasions uneasiness. Sends for examination accounts of expenses incurred in the Indian Department under Lieutenant-Colonels Brown and Douglas and, if just, to pay them. Directs him to enquire into the accounts for which Mr Nichol Turnbull, Assistant-Commissary at St Augustine, drew two bills on Major Morrison which have been protested. If properly incurred they are to be paid. Information has been received which leaves no doubt of peace. Recommends the Loyalists to his protection.
