Full Description:
Washington to Carleton. Headquarters. In answer to Carleton's letter dated 31 March [1783] regarding the Six Nation Indians. Has good reason to believe that the Indians by their own barbarous conduct have brought upon themselves the severities experienced [after their defeat of the Sandusky expedition]. The actions were not under his direction, he can only speak of them as he is directed. Says that Colonel [William] Crawford was not in the least concerned in the unhappy massacre of the Moravian Indians [at the Delaware village of Gnadenhutten, Ohio Country]. Carleton's letter and its enclosures have been sent to Congress. Lacking any official confirmation of peace he cannot give Haldimand the assurances he seeks.
