Full Description:
Chevalier de la Luzerne to Carleton. Philadelphia. Original in French with separate English translation. Acknowledges letter of 6 April and thanks him for communicating the news of peace. The exchange of ratifications, of which they will undoubtedly be informed of directly from France, only adds to his satisfaction. The remaining French troops will be evacuated from the United States as soon as transports are collected. Hopes circumstances may permit him to express his pleasure personally. Postscript dated 12 April The frigate 'Astree' just arrived from St Domingo in 17 days brought news of the peace to the islands: Admiral Hood was cruising off the Cape when the 'Astree' arrived there.
